Lydia Phelps, the Loras College women's lacrosse team (3-2) set the pace of play early and never let up against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (2-3) as the Duhawks rallied together a full-team effort on Wednesday to defeat the Eagles, 16-12.
The dynamic duo of Brunn and Wolf got the scoring started for the Duhawks as the pair connected for three of Loras' first four goals in the opening ten minutes.
Hannah Medina added a goal in the mix before the Eagles put up their first points with 22:09 on the clock.
Pearl Mueller tallied her first goal of the contest off an assist from Wolf before the senior added a goal of her own off Brunn returning the favor on the assist. Medina scored again, this time off the pass by
Marianne Gleason and Brunn tallied another goal with the help from Wolf to give Loras an 8-2 lead with 7:35 left in the half. UW-La Crosse scored three-unanswered goals to cut Loras' lead, 8-5, but Gleason put the Duhawks back on track with another goal to close out the half.
Just as she had started the game, Brunn notched the first goal of the game off another assist by Wolf before the Eagles found a bit of a burst on offense, scoring twice to cut the score, 10-7. Mueller scored just under a minute later off the pass from Wolf and the two teams began a back-and-forth battle, trading goals for the next four minutes.
Erin Conley started a 2-0 run for the Duhawks followed by a goal by Brunn off a free position attempt to lead 14-9 but the Eagles made a last-ditch effort to cut the gap, scoring two goals to make the score 11-14 with just over seven minutes left to play. Brunn stopped the run with her eighth goal of the game and sealed the win for Loras with another in the final 90 seconds.
Brunn's nine goals ranks second in the single-game record book while Wolf broke her own record for single-game assists, set two weeks prior, with ten. Her 11 points rank her second in the record book and with an assist, Brunn's ten points sit third.
Lydia Phelps tied the program-best 20 saves for the second time this season and
Kayla Tilkes had another excellent night on defense, coming away with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers, ranking ninth for a single game record, and Gleason's ten draw controls tie her for third in the single-game record book. As a team, the Duhawks' offense was firing on all cylinders, shooting 16-24 on the night and highlighted by Brunn scoring on nine of her 11 shots, and setting a new single-game record for assists with 13.
Loras looks to carry the momentum into the start of the conference slate as they travel to Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, Mar. 27 to play Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) opponent, Wartburg College. Game time is set for noon.
