Tilkes' Record Night Helps Duhawks Fend Off Rams in MWLC Thriller

Contact: Emily Adlfinger, Director of Athletic Communications, 563-588-7970

Apr. 14, 2021 – Senior Kayla Tilkes shattered the single game record for caused turnovers in the Loras College women's lacrosse team's win against Cornell College (3-3, 0-2 MWLC) as the Duhawks (6-3, 2-1 MWLC) outlasted the Rams for a 13-12 win in a closely-contested Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) battle.

As they have much of the season, Katlynne Wolf and Clare Brunn connected for the first goal of the game five minutes into the action before Pearl Mueller scored her first goal 17 seconds later, giving Loras the early 2-0 lead. The Rams scored their first a minute later but Mueller scored another quick tally off an assist by Wolf to pull Lora ahead, 3-1. Cornell found a bit of a run and scored three unanswered goals in a two-minute span to take its first and only lead of the game, 4-3, but Hannah Medina sparked a run for Loras with a goal at the 18:26 mark before Mueller scored again and Medina and Marianne Gleason both added goals within the one-minute span to give the Duhawks a 7-4 advantage. The Rams added two more to come within one point but Mueller returned the favor to Wolf, feeding her a well-timed pass for Wolf to take to the net and close out the first half with an 8-6 lead.

Just as they had started the game, Wolf and Brunn connected for the opening goal of the second half but the Rams scored one right after to keep the score close, 9-7. A few minutes later, Brunn scored again to help Loras regain a three-point lead but Cornell scored twice more to pull within one point with 12:15 remaining. Wolf found Mueller open for another goal two minutes later and then found the goal herself to score and put Loras ahead 13-9, but the Rams made a late push with three goals in the final five minutes to come back within one point. The Duhawks played a strategic end to the game as both teams fought for possession and a strong performance by Loras' defensive unit kept the Rams off their offensive end with no opportunity to score.

Mueller had a season-high five goals while Brunn added three goals and both Wolf and Medina scored twice. Wolf had eight assists in the game for a team-high ten points and Gleason led the team with ten draw controls, tying her career-best. To go with her record-setting 11 caused turnovers, Tilkes scooped up 12 ground balls, moving her up on the single-game record list to rank third. In goal, Lydia Phelps made ten saves.

The Duhawks continue the quest to land their first bid in the MWLC Tournament as they travel to play Augsburg University on Saturday, Apr. 17. Game time in Minneapolis is set for 7 P.M.
