MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Apr. 17, 2021) – The Loras College women's lacrosse team (6-4, 3-2 MWLC) battled back with a second-half offensive spurt to challenge the Augsburg University Auggies (3-5, 3-1 MWLC) to give it all they had on Saturday but the Auggies outlasted the Duhawks' push as Loras fell, 14-11 in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) showdown.
Marianne Gleason scored the first goal for the Duhawks five minutes into the game but the Auggies came back a minute later to score and took the lead, 2-1, with a second goal at the 17:04 mark. Another goal by Gleason put a quick stop to the run but the Auggies scored on the next possession and scored again a minute later to hold onto a two-point lead. Looking to make a play happen,
Pearl Mueller found
Clare Brunn in the eight meter for an open shot and goal but Augsburg stopped the Duhawks' momentum with a four-goal run to close out the half and take an 8-3 lead.
Erin Conley helped the Duhawks off to a strong start in the second half, scoring after Gleason won the opening draw, but the Auggies came back and did the same thing on the next draw, taking possession and capitalizing with a goal. Augsburg scored again to grow the lea, 10-4 but Brunn scored two to get the Duhawks working on offense. Both teams traded points as Mueller scored her first of the game to keep the Duhawks in it and a goal by Brunn with the assist from
Katlynne Wolf sparked a three-goal run to cut the score, 13-10. The Auggies broke the streak with a goal with 1:40 left to play and Gleason responded back with another to keep Loras within three, but time was on the side of the Auggies who held on for the win as the buzzer sounded.
Brunn and Gleason both had four goals in the game while Mueller scored twice and Conley had one of her own. Wolf tallied two assists while Gleason had a team-high nine draw controls and
Kayla Tilkes added four more ground balls and four caused turnovers to her growing accolades. In goal,
Lydia Phelps made 12 saves on 26 shots. The Duhawks won the battle at the circle, winning 14 draws to Augsburg's 13.
The Duhawks wrap up the regular season on the road at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Friday, Apr. 23. Game time is set for 3 P.M.
