CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Apr. 18, 2021) - The Loras College softball team (1-17, 1-13 A-R-C) wrapped up their weekend at Coe College as they faced the Kohawks (16-7, 11-4 A-R-C) in an American Rivers Conference matchup.
Hannah Wubben scored the game-tying run in the fourth inning on an infielder error to force the game into extra innings but the Kohawks responded in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
The Duhawks wasted no time putting runs on the board, scoring immediately in the top of the first inning after
Hadalyn Anderson hit a lead off single and stole second to get into scoring position for
Gabriella Garcia. With one out in the inning, Garcia reached first on a single and put Anderson on third with
Grace Houghton due up at the plate. Houghton reached on a fielder's choice that saw Garcia thrown out at second and Anderson cross the plate to go ahead 1-0.
The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the second inning as the Kohawks scored the tying run on an infield error with bases loaded.
Loras took off once again in the top half of the third inning after Anderson again reached base on a single and stole second to get into scoring position on the base path for Garcia. As was the story in the first inning, Anderson advanced to third on a Garcia single that saw Garcia reach second on a throw out attempt at third. With runners on second and third, Houghton posted an RBI single to score Anderson and advance to second and score Garcia on an error from Coe left fielder Ruby Kappeler to give Loras a two run advantage at 3-1. In the bottom of the same inning, Coe responded by scoring three runs of their own to take a one run lead.
After back-to-back outs in the top of the fourth inning, Wubben reached base on an error by catcher Skyler Stookey and advanced to third on the play. Wubben crossed home on an error by first baseman Madi Parson to tie the game back up at 4-4 after four innings of play.
With Wubben scoring the tying run, the game was forced into extra innings to decide a winner, where the Kohawks prevailed on a leadoff double that scored a batter later on an error to give Coe the 5-4 victory.
Kayla Stich got the start in the pitchers' circle for the Duhawks, allowing four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings pitched before
Nicole Bendig got the call and allowed only one hit in three batters faced.
Taylor Donnell closed out the game, throwing 4.0 innings with only one run on three hits.
Anderson had a productive day at the plate, going 3-4 with one double and scoring two runs in the game. Houghton drove in two runs for the Duhawks with a 1-4 performace while Garcia and
Jessica Bulanda each added two hits for Loras.
The Duhawks are slated to take on Central College on Friday, Apr. 23 in an A-R-C doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM in Pella, Iowa.
