Kayla Tilkes tie the single-game record for caused turnovers and
Jenna Jager take one for the team and step into goal when the team needed it most to defeat the Scots, 16-7, and improve to 2-0 in Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) action.
Erin Conley and
Clare Brunn got things rolling for the Duhawks to open the game with back-to-back goals in the opening three minutes before Brunn added two more off assists by
Katlynne Wolf to lead 4-0 with 22:35 left in the first half. The Scots responded with a goal to get on the board but
Pearl Mueller got Loras back on track with another goal off the pass by Wolf. Brunn scored again to put Loras up, 6-1 and Mueller added another with 7:16 left on the clock to give the Duhawks the 7-2 advantage heading into halftime.
Brunn added to Loras' lead in the opening minute of the second half with two goals to extend the lead, 9-2, and
Hannah Medina got in on the scoring action, converting a free position shot with 24:07 left in the game. The Scots scored three minutes later but Mueller responded right back to stop the momentum and put Loras ahead, 11-3, with 20:46 remaining. Monmouth scored again on the next possession and the Duhawks saw Jager step into goal for an injured
Lydia Phelps with ten minutes remaining but Conley scored twice more and Brunn scored her seventh goal of the game to rally behind the Duhawks and lead 14-5. The Scots added two more but it was not enough as Medina and Brunn notched two more goals for Loras to come away with the win and improve to 2-0 in MWLC action.
Brunn had another stellar day with eight goals on nine shots with one assist and a team-high six draw controls. Conley and Mueller both added three goals and Wolf had a team-high five assists. Defensively, Tilkes had ten ground balls, ranking fifth in the single-game record book, and tied the single-game record for caused turnovers with seven while Phelps had seven saves and was credited with the win.
The Duhawks face defending conference champions Hamline University on Sunday, Apr. 11 for Senior Day. First draw is set for 11 A.M.
