Apr. 5, 2021 – After a brief rain delay, the sun came out for the Loras College softball team (1-12, 1-8 A-R-C) to host the final game of the series against Simpson College (7-8, 5-4 A-R-C) on Monday afternoon at Faber Clark Field but the Duhawks came up short in a 9-1 decision to the Storm.
Both teams opened the game retiring three-straight but the Storm got momentum going in the second inning with a lead-off homerun to take a 1-0 lead.
Ellie Schill got on base on a bunt in the second but was caught stealing second to end the inning and the Storm came out swinging to start the third inning with another homerun.
Hannah Wubben and
Abby Jones got on base in the bottom of the inning off a walk and error at second base, respectively, but the Duhawks ended the inning with no more runs heading into the fourth. Simpson came out with another hot start and homerun to start the fourth and lead 3-0 before driving in a two-run single to go ahead, 5-0. The Storm added three more runs three batters later to pull ahead 8-0 but
Kayla Stich came in to put and got the Duhawks out of the inning with a strikeout.
Simpson added one more run in the top of the fifth to lead 9-0 but Loras was able to get on the board in the bottom of the inning after Wubben hit a well-placed bunt between first and second base to get on and
Gabriella Garcia walked to give Loras two on base.
Grace Houghton came in as the designated hitter for Stich and singled to left center, bringing Wubben in to score.
Taylor Donnell hit a single to load the bases but the Storm ended the inning on a fly out to left field and secured the win with an eight-run margin.
Donnell, Houghton, Schill and Wubben all registered a hit in the game while Jones came away with a stolen base. Playing at catcher in the game,
Hadalyn Anderson had three putouts along with Jones, Schill and
Jessica Bulanda and at the circle, Donnell threw two strikeouts, allowing eight hits.
The Duhawks travel to Cedar Rapids on Thursday, Apr. 8 to play Coe College for the first two games of the series. Game one is set to begin at 2:00 P.M.
