CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 12, 2021) – The Loras College softball team (2-27, 2-23 A-R-C) saw the season come to a close in the play-in game for the 2021 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Tournament on Wednesday, falling 8-0 at the hands of No. 8-seed Buena Vista University.
After
Abigail Bergholz made her way to first after getting hit by a pitch,
Gabriella Garcia had the first hit of the game with a single but was left on with Bergholz. The Beavers came up to the plate and had an explosive start to the game, putting up six runs in the bottom of the first inning off a grand slam and unearned run. The Duhawks loaded the bases to start the second inning with singles by
Jessica Bulanda,
Ellie Schill and
Claire Peachey to load the bases. The Beavers' defense closed out the side and added another run off an RBI single to pull ahead 7-0 but Loras responded by a quick three-up-three-down bottom of the third and another no-run inning in the fourth.
Hadalyn Anderson drew a walk in the top of the fifth to get on base but Buena Vista's defense ended the inning with two outs before putting up two hits and an eighth run in the bottom of the inning to take the win.
Garcia, Bulanda, Schill and Peachey each registered a hit in the game and Anderson recorded a walk.
Kayla Stich held the majority of pitching duties for the Duhawks, recording one strikeout while allowing five hits and two runs.
