WAVERLY, Iowa (May 22, 2021) - In a must-win tiebreaker game to advance to the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Tournament Championship game, the No. 3 seeded Loras College baseball team (25-18, 17-15 A-R-C) met back up with the No. 2 seeded Luther College Norse (30-14, 23-9 A-R-C) after defeating the conference foe Friday night. The Duhawks' postseason run came to a close after being edged by a 5-2 margin, seeing the Duhawks' close out the season with the most postseason victories since the 2008 season.
The Duhawks got off to an early jump on the Norse, striking first in the top of the second inning on a lead-off triple off the bat of red-hot
Dylan Pardoe to bring freshman designated hitter
Daniel Rogers to the plate. Rogers posted a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Luther second baseman Peyton Lindmark that saw Pardoe score from third on the play for the first run of the inning.
Joe Egan did his job at the plate in advancing Rogers to third on a sacrifice bunt to bring
Bill Luzzo up, who walked to put two runners on for
Ryan Wohlers. With Wohler's in the box, Luzzo advanced to second and Rogers scored on a throwing error from Norse pitcher John Colucci III to bring the score to 2-0 after two innings of play.
The Norse responded an inning later by putting four straight runs on the board and added another in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to its resting place at 5-2 in favor of Luther to move on and face No.1 seeded Coe College in the A-R-C Tournament Championship.
Head coach
Carl Tebon turned to
Julian Lopez to make a start on the mound for the Duhawks, where Lopez dished 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits before
Davis Pasco came in at relief. Pasco finished out the game, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing one runs on two hits and striking out four.
Egan led the Duhawks offensively, accounting for two of the team's six hits while Pardoe recorded the Duhawks' only extra-base hit in the game.
The 2021 season saw major highs for the Duhawks, as they entered the season ranked No. 8 in the A-R-C Preseason Coaches' Poll, going on to finish third in the conference with a historic 10-0 win over the then-ranked No. 25 Coe College Kohawks. At the end of the season, senior shortstop
Luke Fennelly led the conference in runs scored with 50 and had a conference-leading 11 home runs.
