CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Sept. 21, 2021) - Riding high on a seven-game win streak, the Loras College women's volleyball team (10-2, 1-1 A-R-C) traveled to Cedar Rapids on Tuesday night to square off against the Coe College Kohawks (9-4, 2-0 A-R-C) in their second American Rivers Conference contest of the season. After a fourth set comeback, the Duhawks forced the match into a fifth set to decide a victor, but the Kohawks prevailed in one of the highest contested matches of the season thus far.

The match started with a pair of kills from freshman Cat Gleason to give Loras a 2-0 lead from the jump, but Coe responded by taking a six point lead at 9-3 before a Kate Tidman error and a Gleason service ace brough the Duhawks within four at 9-5. The Kohawks continued to drive the first set through the second half, taking at 25-13 set victory.

Three straight Kohawk errors followed by a Sam Stoffregen service ace gave the Duhawks an immediate four point lead in the second set of the match before back to back kills from Kate Tidman stopped the scoring run. The two teams continued to score back and forth through the middle of the set before Gleason took control of the offense, helping drive the Duhawks to a 5-1 scoring run with three kills in the run while Liz Fleckenstein added two. Ahead by two at 14-12, the Duhawks added three more to their score to go up by five after Fleckenstein and Moira Mixan floored two kills with the drive rounded out by a Tidman attacking error. The set ended in dominant fashion in favor of Loras as they scored four straight to close out the set with a 25-19 final score.

Coe started the third set with an early 3-0 lead but a kill from the hand of Fleckenstein sparked a six point scoring run with only two of the points coming from Kohawk errors while Fleckenstein, Lyndsi Wilgenbusch and Gleason put down kills and Stoffregen added another ace to bring the score to 6-3. The Kohawks scored one back on a service error but two straight errors and a Wilgenbusch kill gave Loras three more to pad the lead at five points. Loras held the lead through the majority of the set, going ahead by seven late on a pair of Gleason kills and a Fleckenstein kill to bring the score to 18-11. Coe's offense clicked late in the set, however, as they clawed back from a seven point deficit to see the score tie five times at the end of the set before they took set three 26-24 to go up 2-1 going into the fourth.

The Kohawks again took an early lead in set four but Loras took the lead at 6-5 after scoring four straight on two Wilgenbusch kills, a Mixan service ace and a Coe attacking error. Coe went ahead again soon after, seeing themselves with a four point lead at 14-10 before James Keefe got the Duhawks' offense rolling again, posting two straight kills followed by another Gleason kill and two Coe errors to take the lead once again at 15-14. No matter the lead the Duhawks seemed to take, the Kohawks seemed to grab it right back, eventually controlling a three point lead at 19-16 before Wilgenbusch proved her recognition as American Rivers Conference Offensive Player of the Week by posting three straight kills to tie the game at 19-19 before Olivia Smith threw down a killl to round out the four point run and give Loras a 20-19 advantage. From that point on, the score tied six times before Wilgenbusch struck again to put the Duhawks up by one at 27-26 before the set finally came to a close on a Gracie Urbatsch error to force the match into a do or die fifth set.

Wahlert Catholic graduate Krystal Tranel got the ball rolling in the fifth set, throwing down a kill for the first point of the set before Coe responded right after to tie the score at one apiece. The two teams traded blows consistently through the entire final set with the lead changing twelve total times before Coe outscored Loras 5-1 to take the match with a final set score of 15-12.

Both teams performed well offensively with Loras hitting an impressive .236 percent to Coe's .238 percentage. Wilgenbusch led the Duhawks with 20 kills in the match followed by Fleckenstein and Gleason who each had 17. Gleason's 17 kill performance marks a career best in the purple and gold for the freshman middle blocker while also posting four total blocked in the match. Stoffregen had a strong night at the service line with two aces to her name with Mixan and Gleason notched one each. Sophomore setter Sara Hoskins had 51 assists in the match and aided defensively with 21 digs while Tranel led the match with 28 digs.

The Duhawks are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 25 as they travel to Madison, Wis. to take on UW - La Crosse and Edgewood College in a triangular hosted by Edgewood. The first match against UW - La Cross is slated to begin at 2:00 PM, followed by Edgewood at 4:00 PM.
