WAVERLY, Iowa (Sept. 28, 2021) – In a close battle from start to finish, Loras College women's tennis junior
Isabel Schwabe had the final say in the deciding match of the evening, coming away victorious at No. 2 singles to help the Duhawks (2-3, 1-2 A-R-C) grab their first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) win of the season in Waverly with a 5-4 victory against Wartburg College (4-5, 1-2 A-R-C) on Tuesday.
Doubles play foreshadowed a tight contest with two of the three matches going to the tiebreaker. The Knights took the No. 1 match before
Clair Moore and
Alex Oestreich tied it up with an 8-7 win at No. 3 against Chirihiro Ono and Georgia Nissen, but Wartburg held the 2-1 edge heading into singles play, taking the No. 2 match.
Wartburg pulled ahead 3-1 with a win at No. 6 but
Lauren Diiulio took the No. 1 match against Meadow LaDuke, 6-2, 6-3 and
Dorothy Deans followed with a win at No. 5, 6-4, 6-0 against Gabby Flynn to tie it 3-3-. Wartburg battled back to make it 4-3 with a win at No. 3 singles but
Sara Backus knotted the score yet again with her win at No. 4 against Ambriel Jacobs, 7-6, 6-2.
With one match to play, it was winner take all for the conference battle and a match with much on the line lived up to they hype. Wartburg's Natalie Kaiser took the first set, 6-3 against Schwabe but she flipped the scrip to take the second set 6-3 and stayed vigilant for a 6-4 win in the tiebreaker and seal the win for Loras.
The Duhawks continue conference action with a pair of matches on Homecoming Saturday, hosting Simpson College and Central College at 9:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M., respectively.
