Wrestling Hosts Loras Open

Jan. 29, 2022 – The Loras College wrestling team hosted the Loras Open at the Graber Center Saturday, seeing competition spanning from the NJCAA to NCAA Division I go toe-to-toe. The Duhawks finished the day with nine finishing in the top eight highlighted by Colin Murphy who took second at 197 lbs.

At 125 lbs., Dylan Lauriano got his day started with an 18-3 technical fall over Central College's Drew Kelso but a narrow loss by decision in the next round saw him move into consolation where he took on teammate Justin Murray.

Murray fell in his first match of the day and advanced in consolation on a medical forfeit where he met up with Lauriano and stayed alive with a 6-0 decision victory to face St. Ambrose University's Steele Dias. Murray pinned Dias in the third period to move on to the fifth-place match, taking a major decision victory over Buena Vista University's Brandon Foster to finish fifth in the class.

Jayson Weidman wrestled at 133 lbs. for the Duhawks and kicked off his day with an 11-2 major decision victory over Central's Anthony Bestell before moving on to face Jackson Bresson, also from Central. Weidman emerged victorious over Bresson with a 13-8 victory by decision before falling to University of Northern Iowa's Julian Farber to send him to the third-place match. Weidman met up with Matthew Chi from University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the third-place match and ended his day taking fourth after falling 10-4 to Chi.

Peyton Bass also saw action in the 133 lb. bracket and started his day with an 8-4 decision over Central's Gabe Thomas before falling to Chi in sudden victory to move into the consolation bracket. Bass made his way through consolation with a 16-4 major decision victory over Bestell to move on and face Central's Chase Poston. A 9-5 decision against Poston saw Bass meet back up with Thomas in the fifth-place match, again defeating his foe for the second time of the day by a 9-3 decision to take fifth.

At 141 lbs., Reis Ginter went toe-to-toe with Dawson Husted from Central after both received a first-round bye, seeing Ginter pin Husted in 4:04 before falling to Upper Iowa's Ethen Doty and bowing out of the competition in consolation to Northern Iowa's Connor Thorpe.
After falling in his first-round match to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Drew Nash, Jacob Hinkle moved to consolation where he received a bye before moving on to face Marcos Barron from Iowa Central Community College. Hinkle downed Barron in the second period by fall but ended his day in the next round with a loss to Kolton Crawford.

Mason McMillen got his day started with a quick 1:14 pin over Cornell's Kyler Henderson before picking up his second pin of the day in the second round over Wisconsin-Whitewater's Nick Valenzona. McMillen stayed alive with a win by decision over Northern Illinois University's Noah Mis but fell to Upper Iowa's Tate Murty to move into the third-place match where he faced Doty and finished the day with a fourth-place finish.

Traevin Osborn wrestled at 149 lbs. for the Duhawks and started his day with a 13-5 major decision victory over St. Ambrose's Noah Gonzalez before taking down Kain Luensman from Upper Iowa with a 10-7 decision. Osborn advanced to square off with Grand View's Tanner Abbas and walked way with a 3-2 decision before moving to the third-place match after falling to Northern Iowa's Cael Rahnavardi. In the third-place match, Osborn took down Adam Allard from Northern Iowa by a 3-1 decision to finish the day in third-place.

Frank Indelli also wrestled at 149 lbs. and earned a first-round win over University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Wyatt Willey by 13-7 decision before falling to Central's Leo Blawou to move to consolation. Indelli made his way through consolation, taking on Reily Dolan from Upper Iowa in his first match, and earning a pin in the closing seconds of the first period to advance and take on Upper Iowa's John Ebaugh who he downed with a 6-4 decision. A medical forfeit against Abbas in the next match saw Indelli meet back up with Blawou for a rematch, seeing Indelli walk away with a shutout victory by decision before finishing sixth on the day.

Daniel Meeker was the Duhawks' third wrestler at 149 lbs. and he started his day with a 5:27 pin over Central's Duncan Delzell before meeting up with Gabe Fox from Northern Iowa in the next round. Meeker dropped Fox with another pin to his name in the final minute of the match before falling to Thomas More's Ryan Moore in the next round to move into the consolation bracket and ending his day against Grand View's Trevor Anderson.

At 157 lbs., Ben Faber fell to Wisconsin-Whitewater's Simon Rillie in his first match of the day before meeting up with Central's Spencer Daves in consolation. Faber took down Daves with a 17-5 major decision to go up against Jack Mefford from Thomas More, who he again majored, this time with a final score of 13-4 before ducking out of the tournament in the next match against Upper Iowa's Ben Foelske.

After receiving a first-round bye and falling in the second round to Northern Iowa's Kaleb Olejniczak, Andrew Herbst made his way through consolation with a pair of wins by fall over Cornell College's Jackson Gonzalez and Buena Vista's Michael De La Cruz before earning a 10-0 shutout major over Rillie but fell in the next match to end his day.

Brock Timmons was the lone Duhawk in the 165 lbs. class and his day started with a first-round bye before he pinned Wisconsin-Platteville's Ryan Pothoof at the 5:00 minute mark of the match. A loss in the next round to Grand View's Jacob Shoop send Timmons to consolation where his day ended against Grand View's Tyson Dowler.

At 174 lbs., Isaac Romero got his day going with a 9-4 decision victory over Upper Iowa's Ryan Faught before moving into consolation after being edged by Grand View's Justin McCunn in the second round. In consolation, Romero met up with Iowa Central's Jesus Gutierrez who he took down by another 9-4 decision but an injury forced Romero to end his day early.

Murphy and Abe Michel squared off against each other in the opening round of the 197 lb. bracket, seeing Murphy walk away with a 5-2 win by decision before taking on another teammate in Tad Griffin who defeated Derek Venteicher in his first match of the day to meet up with Murphy. Winning by a 9-2 decision over Griffin, Murphy went on to face Grand View's Elijah Davis and staying alive with a 4-2 win in sudden victory. Murphy then advanced to the championship match after earning a first period fall over Grand View's Gus Davis and took second in the tournament after falling to Northern Iowa's Adam Ahrendson.

In consolation, Michel and Venteicher squared off with Michel walking away with a 16-0 technical fall before taking on another teammate in Kolton Bartow. Michel advanced after taking down Bartow 7-6 before ending his day against Iowa Central's Trevion Sample.

Griffith received a bye in the consolation before taking down Central's Stevie Maddox 14-7 to meet up with teammate Richard Hunter who he took down 13-10 to stay alive and take on Minnesota State University-Mankato's Tommy Johnson but a loss by decision ended his day.

In the championship round, Hunter received a first-round bye before he pinned Iowa Central's Colten Goodell in 1:40 to meet up with Grand View's Davis who defeated Hunter to send him to consolation.

Jake Lamonto received a first-round bye before falling in the second round to move into consolation where he took down Josh Piechowski of Minnesota-Mankato by way of a 7-4 decision before finishing his day against Northern Illinois's Matt Zuber.

Charles Langenberg wrestled in the 285 lb. bracket for the Duhawks and received a bye in the first round before falling to Quinn Wilcoxen from Cornell to move to consolation. Langenberg squared off with Wisconsin-Platteville's Luke Leranth and advanced in the bracket with a 3-1 win in sudden victory before falling to Iowa Central's Kade Campbell.

The No. 1 Duhawks are back in action on Friday, Feb. 4 as they take on cross-town rivals in the University of Dubuque. The dual is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start at the Stoltz Sports Center on the campus of the University of Dubuque.
