WAVERLY, Iowa (Oct. 1, 2022) – The Loras College football team was hoping to pull off yet another impressive upset on Saturday, but it wasn't meant to be as the Duhawks suffered their first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) loss of the season at the hands of the 21st-ranked Wartburg College Knights.
The Duhawks (2-3, 2-1 A-R-C) felt optimistic rolling into the game on Saturday despite facing a stout Wartburg (5-0, 3-0 A-R-C) team, but couldn't hold up in a 42-3 defeat to the Knights, who look primed to be the top team in the conference this season.
Wartburg entered the game with one of the best defenses in the whole country and proved so again as Loras managed just three points in the affair. That fourth-quarter field goal from sophomore
Scott Talmadge marked the first points against the Wartburg defense since allowing a touchdown in its opening week matchup at Monmouth College.
The Knights' scored 14 points in each the first and second quarters, then added one score in each the third and fourth quarters to gradually build their lead as the game went on. Senior defensive back
Joey Foley came up with a pair of big interceptions in the second half to try and keep things close, but it wasn't enough to get the offense going.
Loras managed 213 yards of total offense against the Knights' steady defense, with the majority of the output coming in the passing game as junior
Garrett Hutchison and sophomore
Evan England combined for 158 yards in the air. Sophomore
Da'Mani Brown led all Duhawk pass catchers with six catches for 63 yards in the game.
Senior running back
Ty Bausch led the Duhawk running game with 40 yards and zero negative yardage plays. Wartburg's Hunter Classen netted 90 yards on the ground to lead all rushers, while Ben Bryant totaled 68 yards from his RB2 spot.
The Duhawks will aim to regroup and get back to .500 next weekend as they return to the Rock Bowl to host Buena Vista University to celebrate Homecoming. Kickoff in Dubuque is scheduled for 1 P.M.
