INDINANOLA, Iowa (Oct. 15, 2022) – Things keep looking up for the Loras College football team as the Duhawks put on another strong performance on Saturday afternoon, this time in the form of a 63-21 trouncing of the Simpson College Storm.
The Duhawks (4-3, 4-1 A-R-C) got back over .500 and kept pace in the regular season standings with their win over the Storm (0-6, 0-4 A-R-C), fending off any potential upset during Simpson's Homecoming weekend.
Loras' rushing defense was huge in their winning efforts Saturday, holding the Storm to just 38 yards on the ground. The defense even got in the scoring column early in this one as senior defensive back
Mason Morris laid a huge hit on the Storm's running back Desmond Alexander near midfield to force a fumble.
Senior
Josh Rydberg was there to scoop up the loose ball, returning it 40 yards for a touchdown to put the Duhawks up 14-0 late in the first quarter. Â That somehow was only the second-longest scoring play for the Loras defense in the game as senior defensive back
Jace Gwynn intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it 100 yards the other way to keep the Storm at bay, making it 36-7 in favor of the Duhawks early in the third quarter.
Morris and senior
Zach Kemp tied for the team lead with eight tackles each on the day while each forced a fumble. Gwynn and junior linebacker
Andrew Hefel both reeled in interceptions while Gwynn added a pair of pass break ups.
Senior running back
Ty Bausch scored the first touchdown of the game to get Loras on the board midway through the first quarter. Bausch was part of a balanced Duhawk rushing attack as he finished the day with 52 yards. Bausch added a two-yard receiving touchdown in the second quarter to help contribute to the passing game that was again led by sophomore quarterback
Evan England, who put together another solid performance on Saturday.
England finished the day 25-for-33 for 284 yards, throwing for four touchdowns and adding one on the ground to account for five touchdowns on the day, marking the second straight week that he's done that.
The Wheaton, Ill. native was also the team's leading rusher with 61 yards, including a 29-yard run that served as the longest play on the ground for either side. He even added a rushing score on a two-point conversion to put a little extra on his stat line.
England and junior quarterback
Garrett Hutchison completed passes to nine different Duhawks on the day, led by senior
Marty McGovern and sophomore
Da'Mani Brown, who each reeled in six grabs.
McGovern scored each of the final two touchdowns for Loras, one coming from each of the two quarterbacks. He was second on the team in receiving yards behind Brown, who racked up 109 yards and one touchdown grab. Junior
Jaheem Haynes was the other Duhawk receiver to find the endzone.
Loras returns home to the Rock Bowl next weekend as they look to make it three-in-a-row when they face Coe College at 1 P.M. on Saturday, Oct. 22.
