Oct. 22, 2022 – Loras College's women's volleyball team wrapped up American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play in a huge way on Saturday afternoon as the Duhawks earned a sweep of Central College to claim their second victory in as many days.
The Duhawks (8-17, 2-6 A-R-C) mounted a huge comeback on Friday night to beat Simpson College in five sets and kept that momentum rolling into Saturday with a more dominating 3-0 win over the Dutch (7-14, 1-6 A-R-C).
Sophomore middle blocker
Cat Gleason helped out mightily in the first set as she helped the Duhawks take an early 3-0 lead, then helped stave off a Central charge as she tallied three kills during a 7-1 run that helped keep Loras in command as the Duhawks survived the first set 25-20.
It was Central who jumped out to the early lead in the second set, but the Duhawks stayed close and took their first lead of the frame at 15-14 on a kill from senior pin
James Keefe. Despite facing a couple of ties, the Duhawks didn't trail for the rest of the set as Gleason notched the team's final three points to earn a 25-23 victory.
Set three played out similarly to the second set as Loras hung around and took the lead late before finishing on a 5-1 run to secure their second match in a row.
Gleason finished the match tied for the team lead in kills with freshman pin
Sophie Younkin, each totaling 11 for the match. Senior libero
Sam Stoffregen paced the team with 18 digs while junior
Sara Hoskins tallied 31 assists and a team-high four block assists to help out on the defensive end.
Despite the back-to-back conference wins, Loras in unlikely to qualify for the upcoming A-R-C Tournament. With that, it means there are two more regular season matches left in 2022, starting with the Duhawks traveling to play the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 P.M.
