DECORAH, Iowa (Oct. 29, 2022) – Five passing touchdowns from sophomore quarterback
Evan England catapulted the Loras College football team to a 40-21 victory on the road at Luther College on Saturday afternoon, giving the Duhawks a .500 road record for 2022.
The Duhawks (5-4, 5-2 A-R-C) shut down the run yet again, holding the Norse (1-7, 1-5 A-R-C) to under 100 net rushing yards while the offense managed to get going in the pass game to earn a fifth straight victory over Luther.
England and the offense started out quick as the Duhawks' first drive went 67 yards on eight plays for a quick 7-0 lead as senior running back
Ty Bausch punctuated the drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown.
A muffed punt on the next possession gave the Norse a chance to pull even, and they did so on the first play as Beau Cornwell found Nick Gonzalez for a 23-yard touchdown strike. That play kept the home team in it early in the first quarter, but that would be the only Luther score until the fourth quarter.
While the defense was taking care of business, England and the offense tallied four touchdowns and scored 26 straight points to take a commanding 33-7 lead. Three of England's four passing touchdowns during that span went to sophomore wide receiver
Da'Mani Brown.
Brown reeled in nine receptions to lead all pass catches in the game. The Duhawks' top receiver totaled 129 yards to go over the century mark in that category for the fourth time this season. His three touchdown grabs went for two, 13, and 44 yards, with the 44-yarder being his longest play of the day.
Sophomore running back
Jamel Britt reeled in a six-yard touchdown grab late in the second quarter to add to stellar first half for the Duhawks.
While England was good through the air, he was just as good on the ground as the sophomore signal caller led all rushers with a net of 98 yards on the day. England finished the game 30-for-43 passing for 344 yards and five touchdowns while adding those 98 rushing yards.
Luther tried to mount a fourth-quarter comeback with a pair of touchdown grabs from their top target Andre Atkins, but it was too little too late as senior wide receiver
Marty McGovern reeled in a 20-yard touchdown of his own to boost the Duhawks to a 40-21 win.
Senior defensive back
Jace Gwynn led a balanced Duhawk defense with five total tackles, including four solo stops. Senior defensive back
Mason Morris tallied a pair of tackles for loss while
Andrew Hefel,
Marcus Lampley, and
Dawson Charley combined to tally a pair of sacks to aid the Loras defensive front.
Junior defensive back
Rashaad Johnson reeled in an interception while seniors
Joey Foley and
Dustin Harris each added two pass breakups to lead the secondary.
The Duhawk victory guarantees the team to have at least a .500 in 2022 with one game remaining, the Key City Clash with the University of Dubuque next Saturday, Nov. 5. Loras will also celebrate Senior Day that day before the 1 P.M. kickoff.
