No. 15/10 Loras Ends Season With 3-1 Loss to CWRU in Round of 16

By Nolan DeVriese | Athletic Communications Student Assistant

CLEVELAND, Ohio (Nov. 19, 2022) - Another incredible season for No. 15/10 Loras College women's soccer came to an end on Saturday as the Duhawks fell just short in a hard-fought Round of 16 matchup at No.4 Case Western Reserve University.

The Duhawks (18-1-3) suffer just their first loss of the season 3-1 to the hands of the hosting Spartans (18-0-1), who advance to tomorrow's Round of 8 match. Loras has lost one game in each of the last two seasons, both coming in the NCAA Division III National Tournament to top-five opponents.

Loras had control most of the first half of the game until the 43rd minute when CWRU's Aniya Hartzler scored a late goal for the Spartans. The two sides went back and forth all half with possession after possession as no team had an edge over the other until Hartzler's score. That goal boosted the Spartans to a second goal less than two minutes later as Maggie Farra put one in off the bottom of the crossbar to leave the Duhawks down 2-0 with some work to do in the second half.

In the second half, Loras' defensive star Libby Perry capitalized on a Duhawk scoring chance and headed one in at point-blank range for her first goal of the season in the 66th minute and cut the lead down to one goal. The Duhawks had some life as they got a second wind and controlled the ball all second half, firing off seven shots compared to just four in the first 45 minutes. Senior forward Ryleigh O'Brien led the team in shots with three, all of which were on goal. Senior defender Hannah Schmitz and Perry had two shots each while the Duhawks earned nine corner kick chances to CWRU's four.

That push ultimately wasn't enough as the Spartans added an insurance goal from Camryn Hartman in the 83rd minute to put the game out of reach.

Leading the Duhawk defense was junior goalkeeper Kyndal Kells, who set a new career-high with with 12 saves on the day and was a brick wall all game long. In addition to her save totals, Kells made plenty of other great plays and knock aways that do not show up in the stat sheet.

Loras finishes 2022 with zero losses at home for the second season in a row, a stat that includes both regular season and postseason action. There is a lot to be proud of with this soccer team and this season with seven First Team All-Conference honors, three Second-Team All-Conference honors, and one All-Conference Honorable Mention selection on a team that also swept the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) titles for the second season in a row.
