Shane Liegel is off to another blazing start in 2022 as the 184-lb grappler was named as the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Male Athlete of the Week after another perfect record last week.
The NCAA Division III All-American stayed unbeaten in 2022 with six victories last week, including five at the Concordia University Wisconsin Open on Saturday, to earn the sixth A-R-C Wrestler of the Week honor of his career.
Before the weekend series, Liegel helped lift his 13
th-ranked Duhawks team to a dual victory over A-R-C foe Buena Vista University as he pinned BVU's Jonah Siebert in 1:21 to contributed to Loras' 42-8 victory to start conference action.
Over the weekend, the Spring Green, Wis. native kept up with his dominating was as he breezed through the 184-lb bracket with four straight wins by fall before reaching the championship match.
Liegel, who ranks third nationally in the 184-lb weight class, faced off with the top-ranked wrestler in the class in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Jaritt Shinhoster, as the two got locked in a stalemate that led them into overtime with a 1-1 tie.
In the first overtime period, Liegel managed the first takedown of the bout to secure a 3-1 win via sudden victory to stay unbeaten and take down the No. 1 seed.
Through 10 bouts this season, Liegel is 10-0 with six wins via fall and one via a tech fall.
