Vikings Fend Off Duhawks in 82-72 Contest

Nov. 26, 2022 – Loras College men's basketball team got back to action after the holiday break and ran into trouble against an energetic North Park University squad as the Duhawks fell 82-72 at Lillis Court on Saturday evening.

The Duhawks (2-3) battled throughout the game despite facing a couple of sizable deficits in each half, but couldn't manage to keep pace with the Vikings (4-1).

A quick burst from the Vikings in the early stages of the first half put them up 29-19 with under nine minutes until halftime. Loras responded and snatched the momentum with a 12-2 run that knotted the score at 31-31 with under four minutes to play.

Ten of the points during that run came from sophomore guard Jared Pearson, who notched a career-high with 12 points off the bench for the Duhawks.

After that run, the Vikings would limit Loras to zero field goals and just two free throws to head into half with a 40-33 lead after scoring twice in the final 19 seconds of the half.

Out of the break, North Park darted out to a 12-3 run that extended its lead to 16 points at 52-36. Loras managed to chip away and cut the deficit down to seven points near the midway point of the half as three pointers from junior Declan Ciurlik and sophomore Ali Sabet kept the Duhawks in contention.

Stifling defense from the Vikings prevented Loras from getting close enough to pose a real threat to the lead as North Park tallied 18 points off of 12 Duhawk turnovers with 17 of those occurring in fastbreak situations.

Sabet led Loras with 16 points while Ciurlik added 14 as the duo combined for five of the team's nine three-pointers on the night. Guards Myles Barry and Tyler Bass each contributed nine points while sophomore forward Alex Singleton led the way with seven rebounds.

The Duhawks get back to conference action on Wednesday, Nov. 30 when they host Coe College in an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) game at 7:30 P.M.
