MENOMONIE, Wis. (Dec. 9, 2022) – Loras College men's basketball put together a huge second half on Friday night to overcome a 12-point first-half deficit and take down the University of Wisconsin-Stout 83-76 on the road.
The Duhawks (5-3) and Blue Devils (4-5) went back and forth in the first half before a late run saw UW-Stout lead by as many as 12 points. Loras responded with a run of its own and managed to cut the deficit down to five before the halftime break, which led off for a stellar 51-point second half.
The lead changed hands a couple of times early in the second half before a three-pointer from junior guard
Ali Sabet made it 57-55 in favor of the Duhawks with just over 11 minutes to play. That basket served as the final lead change as Loras began to build a comfortable lead.
Loras' lead never reached double figures as the Blue Devils hung around, but a solid shooting performance allowed the Duhawks to maintain their lead.
In the second half, the Duhawks connected on seven of their 14 three-point attempts to bring their game total to 9-for-27 (33.3%). Not only that, but the Duhawks found themselves at the free throw line 35 times overall and 25 times in the second half. Loras converted on 30 of its 35 attempts to set a new season-best free throw percentage at 85.7 percent.
The Blue Devils hung around with solid three-point shooting of their own as they connected on 10 shots from deep, but went just 8-for-12 from the free throw line as Loras committed just 15 fouls compared to 25 from UW-Stout.
Each Sabet and sophomore guard
Tyler Bass drained 11 free throws in the game as the two were among four Duhawks to finish in double figures. Sabet led the Duhawks with 22 points while Bass tallied his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore forward
Alex Singleton added 19 points while leading the Duhawks with seven made field goals as junior guard
Myles Barry also scored in double figures with 10 points.
The Duhawks head to Memphis, Tenn. next weekend for a pair of games at Rhodes College, starting with a neutral site matchup with Centre College on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 4 P.M. Loras will then face Rhodes on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 2 P.M.
