WINONA, Minn. (Feb. 19, 2022) – The Loras College men's tennis team (2-4) split a pair of matches on Saturday against the University of Wisconsin-Superior (2-2) and Saint Mary's University (Minn.) (4-4), falling to the Yellowjackets, 7-2, in the opening match of the day before rebounding with a 6-3 win against the Cardinals.
Against UW-Superior, the Duhawks started down 3-0 after doubles play but
Konnor Barth and
Eian Coad collected a pair of wins in singles. Barth defeated Jace Gilbertson 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 at the No. 5 position and Coad took down Frederick Diehl, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6. The Yellowjackets took the remainder of the singles matches to come away with the win.
Loras came out strong with a pair of wins to start off doubles play against Saint Mary's as Barth and
Tommy Linkenheld won their match at the No. 2 spot, defeating Peter Quinn and E.J. Hietala, 8-3.
Sean Gelski and
Nolan Teubel posted an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Brendon Raabolle and Matt Besek to give Loras a 2-1 advantage going into singles.
Kevin Blomquist won his No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 6-1, against Brandon Kurilla and Barth won his No. 5 match against Raabolle, 6-1, 6-2 while Gelski and Coad battled it out at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, in tiebreaker wins. Gelski came back after dropping the first set to 7-6 to Quinn to win the next two 6-1, 10-4 and Coad started with a 6-2 win before Stene took the second set, 6-1, but Coad finished strong to win his match with a 10-7 third set tiebreaker.
The Duhawks return to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 26, starting with a match against Millikin University at 12:30 P.M in Cedar Rapids before opening American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play against the hosts, Coe College, at 4 P.M.
