CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Apr. 19, 2022) – Going up against the 2021 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) regular season champions on the road, the Loras College softball team (17-7, 4-6 A-R-C) ran into a tough competitor on Tuesday, dropping the series against Coe College (18-8, 7-3 A-R-C) 10-2 in the first game and 7-1 in the second.
After the leadoff batter was struck out by Hemm, the Kohawks got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and Hemm closed out the inning with another strike out to keep Coe from adding any more. Coe added another off an error in the outfield to lead 3-0 in the third inning but Loras answered back in the top of the fourth as
Jadyn Anderson got on base off a double to center field and scored off a fielder's choice from
Alyssa Hughes. The Kohawks came back firing in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homerun but Loras' defense closed out the inning with a strikeout by Hemm and two fly outs. Loras scored its final run of the game in the top of the fifth after
Morgan Machovec reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third off a double by
Grace Houghton. Machovec made her way home off an error by the catcher and cut the score, 2-4. Coe came out hot in the bottom of the inning, though, and scored six runs to take a 10-2 lead, ending the game after five innings.
In the nightcap, Coe got ahead early with three runs in the first inning but the Duhawks held them on defense but could not get the bats going at the start. The Kohawks added three more runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead but Loras added one in the fifth after
Emily Monahan got on base with a double to center field and advanced to third on the next at bat. A single up the middle by
Nicole Bendig sent Monahan home and put the Duhawks on the board. Coe scored one more in the fifth and neither team added to their tally through the final two innings as the Kohawks took the second game and series by a score of 7-1.
Schill paced the Duhawks on offense with two hits on three at bats in the first game and
Abby Jones went 3-4 in the second game. Schill, Houghton, Monahan and Anderson all recorded doubles and Hughes and Bendig added RBIs. Hemm added seven more strikeouts through 6.1 innings to her growing total for 169 on the season with the start in the first game and coming in to relieve in the second.
The Duhawks take a quick break from conference action on Thursday, Apr. 21, traveling to Cornell College for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4:00 P.M. in Mount Vernon with the second game to follow.
