CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Apr. 24, 2022) – A day after splitting the series-opening doubleheader, the RV Loras College baseball team (26-8, 10-8 A-R-C) made the trip back to Cedar Rapids to close out the three-game road stretch against the Coe College Kohawks (16-15, 11-9 A-R-C). The Duhawks got off to an early lead and kept the Kohawks scoreless through all nine innings to earn a 4-0 shutout and take the series two games to one, climbing to fourth in the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) standings.
The Duhawks' bats got to work immediately in the top of the first inning as
Max McCallum roped a single into center field with an out in the inning before
Max Cullen wore a pitch to put runners on first and second with
Daniel Rogers due at the plate. Rogers took advantage of his runners on the path and knocked in McCallum on an RBI double into left field to put runners on second and third for
Dylan Pardoe. A single into left field for Pardoe brought in Rogers and Cullen to put the Duhawks up 3-0 from the jump.
Another insurance run came home in the top of the third inning as McCallum led the inning off with a single up the middle of the infield before Cullen put runners on the corners with a single into the gap in right center. A failed pick-off attempt saw runners move, bringing McCallum home on the play to solidify the Duhawks' 4-0 victory to take the series.
Ryan Wohlers had a lights-out performance on the mound, picking up his fourth win on the season after dishing six innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits and striking out four.
Julian Lopez came in to pitch the seventh inning, striking out two of the five batters he faced, allowing one hit while continuing to keep the Kohawks off the board. All-time saves leader
Ethan Peters closed the game out, throwing the final two innings of the game, walking one and striking out one.
At the plate, the Duhawks rifled off six hits led by a stellar offensive performance by McCallum who went 3-for-4 on the day with two runs scored. Cullen, Pardoe and Rogers added a hit apiece while Rogers tallied the game's lone extra-base hit with his RBI double in the first inning.
The Duhawks are back in action on Friday, Apr. 29 as they play host the Wartburg College Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM at Petrakis Park in Dubuque, Iowa.
