COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept. 2, 2022) – A masterful header from junior forward
Reed Miklavcic was all the offense the Loras College men's soccer team would need in their season opener on Friday night as they outlasted Capital University 1-0. The win comes on a night when Loras head coach
Steven McCarthy was honored as a 2021 Inductee into the Capital University Athletics Hall of Fame.
McCarthy was a two-time All-American and four-time all-conference first team selection during his time as a Capital student-athlete (2006-09). He still holds the program records for both points (156) and goals (69) during his career as a Comet.
After a scoreless first half, it took less than three minutes for the Duhawks to get on the board and give their coach a lead against his alma mater. Loras earned a corner kick chance in the 48
th minute as freshman forward
Taylor Sowell sent a perfect pass toward the box, setting up Miklavcic for a header that beat the Comet keeper to the near post.
Miklavcic's goal finally got the Duhawks on the board after they controlled the pace and possession for much of the first half. Loras managed their lead in the second half and played stellar defense in front of their transfer goalkeeper
Owen Johnson, who faced zero shots on goal in his Duhawks debut.
Loras outshot the Comets 9-6 and earned 11 corner kick chances compared to just two such opportunities for Capital.
Miklavcic's goal to start the season comes after he totaled seven goals last season, making him the top returning goal-scorer on this year's team. He managed just two shots on the day, while each he,
Alex Beausoleil, and
Owen Ivanuck put one shot on goal apiece.
The Duhawks stay in Ohio and play their second game of the Fred Myers Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 3 at No. 21 Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio at 7 P.M. ET.
