Sept. 24, 2022 – Improving to 2-0 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) action and securing the first win inside the Rock Bowl to start the home slate, the Loras College football team (2-2, 2-0 A-R-C) used a full-team effort to trounce the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves (1-3, 0-2 A-R-C) on Saturday.
After a short opening drive to start the game, the Duhawks rallied back for an 11-play drive that started on their own 29-yard line and culminated in a one-yard dash into the endzone by
Ty Bausch to put the Duhawks on the board first. The Prairie Wolves came back with a field goal on the next drive and regained momentum to take the lead off a six-yard pass from Carter Terry to Trace Leners after the visitors recovered a fumbled kickoff return. The Duhawks commanded the final four minutes of the first quarter with a 15-play drive and started the second quarter with a touchdown.
Evan England connected with
Da'Mani Brown for a 20-yard pass that put the Duhawks in the redzone and after a run by Bausch set the Duhawks up on the one-yard line, England kept it himself and dove into the endzone to put Loras ahead 14-10. The Prairie Wolves took back the lead after Trystin Myers took off for a 36-yard run to put Nebraska Wesleyan into Duhawks territory and capped the drive with a touchdown with 7:09 left in the half, but Loras responded with an 11-yard pass from England to
Marty McGovern to lead once again.
The Duhawks extended the lead with another Bausch touchdown with less than a minute left in the half and put more distance on the Prairie Wolves in the first minute of the second half, doubling up Nebraska Wesleyan 35-17 thanks to a huge defensive by
Mason Morris and
Josh Kieffer. Morris forced Victor Guzman to fumble the ball and
Josh Kieffer, last week's D3football.com Team of the Week member and A-R-C- Defensive Player of the Week, scooped up the ball and took it to the house for a 23-yard return. The momentum carried with another touchdown for Loras, this time a six-yard scamper for Kielon Pritchett with 7:45 left in the quarter, to take a 42-17 lead. The Prairie Wolves tacked on another touchdown to close out the third quarter and both teams held the other scoreless for the first 13 minutes until Bausch broke through again for this third score of the game to put Loras up 49-24. Nebraska Wesleyan added another touchdown with one minute remaining but it was too little too late as the Duhwaks improved to 2-0 in conference play, treating the home faithful to an action-packed afternoon in the Rock Bowl.
England went 29-42 for 335 yards and one passing touchdown while Bausch led the way in the run game with 122 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Brown tallied 133 receiving yards on seven catches with a 40-yard grab to highlight the day. Defensively, Morris had ten tackles and one tackle for loss along with Kieffer,
Andrew Hefel,
Brandon Phelps,
Blaine Jordan, and
Sean Doyle. The five also helped the Duhawks come away with their second-straight game with five sacks.
Zach Kemp came away with three pass breakups in another complete defensive effort.
Scott Talmadge was a perfect 7-7 on extra points, tying for fourth in single-game records, and averaged 57 yards per kickoff and 457 total yards.
The Duhawks head back on the road on Saturday, Oct. 1 to take on No. 22-ranked Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Kickoff at Walston-Hoover Stadium is set for 1 P.M.
