MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (Sept. 28, 2022) – Loras College's women's volleyball team gave its best shot to Cornell College on the road on Wednesday night but came a few points shy in three well-contested sets.
The Duhawks (4-11) and Rams (9-4) played a trio of close sets, but the home team managed to sneak out with a victory in each of the three to secure the sweep.
Cornell claimed the sets 25-19, 25-21, and 25-22 as the Duhawks pushed them to the brink each time. An early 7-1 run for the Rams created just enough separation that allowed them to snag the first set that went back-and-forth to the end.
The Duhawks led for much of the second set but never could pull away as their largest lead was an early 4-1 advantage. The score was tied on 10 occasions in the set before Cornell claimed eight of the final 11 points to take a 2-0 lead.
Cornell steadily built a sizable lead in the third set, but the Duhawks stayed close enough to mount a comeback bid as a late 7-2 run staved off the sweep for a few rallies, but it was too little too late as the Rams held off the charge at 25-22.
Senior pin
James Keefe was the number one option for the Duhawk offense yet again as she led all scorers with 13 kills. Junior setter
Sara Hoskins was second in that category with seven while adding 23 assists.
Hoskins also anchored he defense with 17 digs to lead a trio of Duhawks –
Riley Deere (12) and
Sam Stoffregen (11) – who recorded double-digit digs.
The Duhawks hit the road this weekend for a tri-match in Rock Island, Ill. with hosting Augustana College and Grinnell College. Loras' game times on Saturday, Oct. 1 are slated for 11 A.M. and 1 P.M.
