Sept. 7, 2022 – For the second time is as many matches, the No. 3 Loras College women's soccer team played to a draw as the Duhawks and the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons finished Wednesday night's game knotted at 1-1.
The Duhawks (1-0-2) dominated time of possession against the Falcons (2-0-1), but only managed one goal despite holding a 34-5 advantage in total shots.
Concordia jumped ahead in the 35
th minute after a handball set up Jordan Lafferty with a free kick chance just outside the box. Her shot was perfectly placed in the upper-left corner to put the Falcons on the board.
The Duhawks would respond in the second half as junior forward
Savannah Johnson found the back of the net in the 50
th minute after she settled down a pass from junior midfielder
Hannah Schmitz. Schmitz's pass mimicked that of a bicycle kick during a scattered play inside CUW's defensive box and found Johnson at the right time for a short-range look.
Johnson's goal was her second of the season and was one of 20 shots the Duhawks fired off in the second half. Loras racked up nine shots alone in the final 10 minutes of the match, but the stellar goalkeeper play of CUW's Brooke Braga kept the Duhawks from notching a game-winner.
Braga tallied 12 saves for the game, marking a career-high for the sophomore. Her final two saves of the match came in the final minute as she turned away a pair of attempts from Duhawk senior
Ryleigh O'Brien.
Four Duhawks tallied multiple shots on goal in the game, and all four came up scoreless against Braga.
Neither side shied away from contact in the match as 26 fouls were split down the middle between the two teams, while CUW was whistled for five yellow cards.
Loras will look to right the ship and get back in the win column on Saturday, Sept. 10, when the Duhawks travel to Decatur, Ill. for a 4 P.M. match at Millikin University.
