Men’s Track and Field Dominates to Win SAU’s Battle in the Hive

January 15, 2023

DAVENPORT, Iowa (Jan. 15, 2023) – It's easier to count the events that the Loras College men's track and field team didn't win on Saturday as the Duhawks got the winter started with a dominating win at St. Ambrose University's Battle in the Hive.

Duhawk individuals or relay teams stood on the top spot of the podium in 12 of the 14 events held on Saturday as the team totaled 198 points to easily clear the runners-up and hosting Fighting Bees (97 points) by over 100.

On the track, it was all Duhawks as the 4x400-meter relay team ended the day with one final victory. That team of senior Josh Smith, junior Ted Kruse, senior Carter Oberfoell, and senior Mike Jasa paced the field with a 3:20.14 time and capped off their days with another win after each of them found success throughout.

Smith clocked a race-winning time of 6.81 in the 60-meter dash, while Kruse did the same in the 400-meters with a 51.15. In addition to those wins, Jasa and Oberfoell earned a 1-2 finish in the 600-meters, Jasa finishing with a winning time of 1:18.67 ahead of Oberfoell's 1:20.46 time as the runner-up.

Jasa's 600-meter time also elevated him two spots to No. 1 on the program's all-time list as Oberfoell jumped from No. 7 to No. 4.

Other race winners for the Duhawks included senior De'Andre Klein in the 200-meters (22.73), senior Wyatt Kelly in the 800-meters (1:55.18), junior Derek Behrens in the mile (4:43.47), and freshman Matt Kruse in the 60-meter hurdles (8.71).

Jumps were dominated by two Duhawk men as senior Ray Venditti took each the high jump and pole vault while junior Derik Bunten nabbed each the long jump and the triple jump. Venditti's high jump mark of 2.00 meters puts him eighth all-time in program history on top of his win in the pole vault as his best mark on Saturday cleared 4.26 meters.

Bunten's winning jumps on Saturday included a long jump mark of 6.79 meters and triple jump mark of 13.20 meters.

The Duhawks will be in action again next weekend as some will travel to Iowa City for the University of Iowa's Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 20-21, while others will stay for the University of Dubuque Open on Saturday, Jan. 21.
