Berea, Ohio (Jan. 22, 2023) - Saturday marked a great start to the new season for the Loras College men's volleyball team (2-0) as it started off hot with commanding 3-0 wins versus St. Norbert College and (RV) Stevenson University at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational.
The (RV)/No. 15 Duhawks play four games in Berea, Ohio this weekend, starting with those two sweeps on Saturday. In the first game against the Green Knights, senior
Jake Filotto got the Duhawks started with a team high in kills with 10. Freshman
Danny Chambers also had a day with 30 assists out of the 33-team total in his collegiate debut.
A newcomer last year who is now filling his shoes as an everyday player is sophomore
Corey Mayotte, who jumped out the gym with his eight kills on his 14 attempts as the Duhwaks rolled past St. Norbert. Senior
Patrick Mahoney made his presence felt in the middle as well as he tallied two huge blocks in the second set, a frame the Duhawks won 25-18.
The Duhawks kept it going in the second game against the Mustangs as Mayotte had the team high in kills with 14, giving him 22 total between the two games. He pounded the ball in the ground all match long, leaving Stevenson with no chance to defend.
Senior
Joe Horn took the reigns as the primary setter in game two and had the touch as he finished with 31 assists. Mahoney and senior
Dorian Fiorenza led the way for the Duhawks at the next as they tallied four blocks each, putting up a brick wall as they strolled past Stevenson with a 3-0 sweep.
The Duhawks are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 22 versus Hilbert College at 12:30 P.M ET and Baldwin Wallace University at 3:00 P.M. ET.
