STORM LAKE, Iowa (Jan. 21, 2023) – Fresh off a tough loss on Wednesday, 21
st-ranked Loras College women's basketball wasted no time in getting back to form as the Duhawks notched yet another lopsided victory with an 88-61 road win at Buena Vista University on Saturday.
The Duhawks (14-4, 7-2 A-R-C) have not lost back-to-back contests in 2022-23 after making the Beavers (6-11, 1-8 A-R-C) the eighth team this season to fall by a 20+-point margin to the purple and gold.
Defense was the leading force behind this particular victory as the Duhawks came away with a season-high 17 steals while forcing a total of 28 Beavers turnovers, which also marks a season-high for BVU. As a result, the Duhawks ran away with advantages in multiple categories, including a 47-7 advantage in points off turnovers and a 17-8 advantage in the fast break.
Loras didn't shoot the ball at an exceptional clip, but produced a more-than-serviceable 31-for-73 (42.5%) overall shooting percentage as its 73 attempts ties a season-high. The Duhawks led handily at 21-8 after the first quarter, but blew the lead wide open in the second quarter as a 13-for-18 shooting performance – aided by 19 points off turnovers – boosted the lead all the way up to as many as 34 before the halftime break.
Thirteen different Duhawks found the scoreboard on Saturday as all but one of those scorers made at least one field goal attempt. They were led by senior guard
Madison Fleckenstein, who paced all scorers in the game with 20 points on an 8-for-14 performance from the field. Fleckenstein also led all players with eight rebounds, including three on the offensive end.
Junior guard
Sami Martin added 16 points to the cause on an efficient 7-for-10 performance while contributing two assists and two steals. Senior guard
Cierra Bachmann was the final of three Duhawks in double figures with 14 points, but her biggest contributions came on the defensive end as she led the team with five steals while adding five rebounds.
Even with her defense being a bright spot, Bachmann's shooting line was as efficient as anyone's as she went 5-for-7 from the field and finished 2-for-3 from deep.
Hannah Thiele (2),
Silvana Scarsella, and
Lexi Beier each came off the bench and combined to make four three pointers to help provide some depth to a well-balanced Loras attack.
After playing five of their last six and each of their last three games on the road, the Duhawks will return home on Wednesday, Jan. 25 to start a stretch of five home games over the last seven to conclude the regular season. Wednesday's matchup with Simpson College is scheduled for 5:30 P.M. at the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
