BELOIT, Wis. (Jan. 22, 2023) – A strong 2022-23 campaign for the Loras College swimming and diving programs is nearing a close, but not before another pair of impressive road victories over Beloit College on Saturday afternoon.
The Duhawk men and women combined to win 16 of the 28 events on Saturday as the men emerged victorious with a 147-62 final tally, while the women outpaced the Buccaneers 124-92.
Numerous Duhawks have had their chances to lead the team during this winter season, and on Saturday it was junior
Brian Day's turn as he won both of his individual races while being part of the runner-up 200-yard medley relay team.
Day paced a pair of teammates in freshman
Joey Kock and junior
Noah James in the 200-yard individual medley before taking the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke race later in the day. His winning margin in the breaststroke race was a slim 0.38 seconds over Beloit's Colin Bolger.
Along with their 1-2-3 finish to Day in the 200-yard IM, Kock and James finished neck-and-neck in the 100-yard butterfly as Kock squeaked by with a winning time of 59.50 to James' 59.92.
Junior
Gannon Harrington aided the team scores by winning each the one-meter and three-meter diving events. His 168.65-point total in the one-meter dive sets a new season-high for the team's top diver.
Junior
Roberto Solis (1000-yard freestyle), junior
Brad LaGrange (200-yard freestyle), and freshman
Caden Gillmore (500-yard freestyle) each claimed a race win as well to help improve the Duhawks to 6-3 in head-to-head competition this season.
On the women's side, senior
Nina Schiro was again the lead swimmer for the Duhawks as she finished with three wins out of the three events she participated in. She started the day as the lead leg of the 200-yard medley relay team that clocked a 2:01.00 to win by more than two seconds over the runners-up from Beloit.
She followed that race up with wins in the 100-yard backstroke and the 500-yard freestyle, making her the only Duhawk to take the top spot in three events.
Two of Schiro's relay teammates also found individual success as senior
Kinsey Bogen and junior
Ellianna Stine each claimed a win of their own. Bogen was tops in the 200-yard freestyle race with a 2:13.06 while Stine paced the field in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:37.89 that easily sets her season-high mark for the event.
Senior
Taylor Hrabak was the final Loras solo swimmer to take first place as she won the 100-yard freestyle event. She was also a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that capped off the meet with a win as she was joined by sophomore
Molly Strohmeyer, freshman
Laney Edgeton, and junior
Annie Quinn.
Loras has just one competition date left on its 2022-23 schedule as both teams will take on the three-day American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) championships on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 16-18 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Coe College will be the host of the event at the Coe Natatorium.
