Jan. 28, 2022 – Another day another sweep for (RV) Loras College men's volleyball as the Duhawks finished off their first homestand of 2023 on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Fontbonne University.
The Duhawks (5-1) have five wins and five sweeps so far this season with the latest coming against the Griffins (2-4) in the finale of the first home weekend of games at the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
Fresh off a four-set defeat to Marian University in the first game of the day, the Griffins came out swinging against the hosting Duhawks and jumped out to a 4-2 lead. Loras appeared to have been caught on its heels to start the contest, which prompted an early timeout from head coach
Dylan Ross.
The pep talk worked and the Duhawks came out ready to take command of the match. After steadily working their way back to a 9-9 tie, the Duhawks scored 11 of the next 15 points to dart out to a 20-13 lead before claiming the opening set 25-16. Senior
Dorian Fiorenza was on serve for four points during a 5-0 run for the Duhawks that helped them pull away from the Griffins.
Set two saw the Duhawks compile another 13 kills after 15 in the first, and four of those 13 came from setter
Joe Horn. The senior finished with five total in the game and had an attacking percentage of .500 from his setter position. He also led the team with 28 assists and 10 digs in the match.
Horn's offensive efforts in the second set helped the Duhawks secure the frame 25-17 as they headed to the third. Fontbonne stuck around early in the final set, but with the score tied at 10-10, Loras tallied seven straight points on just two kills as attacking errors proved to be detrimental to the Griffins during that stretch. That run served as the final turning point before the Duhawks coasted to a 25-20 win to cap off the sweep.
Fiorenza led all players with 10 kills in the match, marking the third time this season he has reached double figures in that category. Senior
Patrick Mahoney followed closely behind with eight kills while tallying three block assists to help lead the Duhawks up front.
The Duhawks will get an extended break before their next match, which is not until Thursday, Feb. 9 against Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. Game time is scheduled for 7 P.M.
