MEQUON, Wis. – The Loras College Duhawk men's wrestling team competed yesterday at the 30th annual CUW Open, hosted by Concordia University. The team ended with a solid performance, finishing with ten place winners.
After his first-round match at 141 lbs,
Jalen Schropp never looked back. Wrestling Wartburg opponents the rest of the way through, Schropp recorded a pin, 5-2 decision, 11-1 major decision, and another fall in the finals to claim gold.
At 165 lbs,
Dustin Bohren also finished his tournament as champion. Behind a tech fall, two pins, and a 2-0 decision, Bohren made it to the finals against Jay Greiner from the University Chicago. Late in the third period, Bohren secured a takedown and nearfall to end the match with a 13-1 major decision win and close out his tournament.
Gabe Fiser, at 157 lbs, also made it to the finals. He looked good all day, recording bonus point victories in three out of his five wins. Fiser concluded his day by dropping his last match to a tough opponent in North Central's Javen Estrada, a returning NCAA National Runner-up at 149 lbs last year.
Along with Bohren, the Duhawks had three additional place finishers at 165 lbs.
Ben Faber (4th),
Allen Catour (5th) and
Aiden Cartwright (6th) all finished with winning records on the day.
The other medalists for Loras were
Carter Anderson (125) and
Zeb Gnida (174). Both sustained injuries in their semifinal matches and forced to medical forfeit out of the tournament, where they finished in 6th place.
The team is back in action on November 30 as they travel to Augsburg University to take on the Auggies in a dual. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
