Miklavcic, Coaching Staff Spotlight A-R-C Men's Soccer Seasonal Awards

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The American Rivers Conference announced its men's soccer annual awards with Loras College's forward Reed Miklavcic having been named the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Men's Soccer Offensive MVP and the Loras coaches earning the A-R-C Coaching Staff of the Year award, the league announced on Wednesday. Miklavcic is the third Duhawk to earn the distinction and one of five total Duhawks to earn All-A-R-C honors in 2023, while Loras' staff is the ninth to earn the award in program history. Miklavcic is joined by midfielder Michael Brandt and forward Bryan Basinger as First Team All-A-R-C selections. Honorable mention honors went to Dani Galiana Torres and Ethan Kelly.

The third Loras player all-time to earn A-R-C Offensive MVP honors (Tigrio Huerta – 2019, Kevin Cavers – 2013), Miklavcic played in 434 minutes through eight conference matches, recording 17 points on seven goals and three assists. The Frankfort, Ky. native was instrumental in Loras' quest to secure the top-seed in the A-R-C Tournament, scoring the game-winning goal with just under three minutes remaining in the regular season finale against Central College. Miklavcic closed out the year with 12 total goals and nine assists, good for 33 total points.

In his first year as the lead man of the men's soccer program, head coach Sam Koenig and assistant coach Matt Pucci helped guide the Duhawks to their 15th league title in program history. The Purple and Gold finished the 2023 season with a conference record of 6-2-0, while closing out the year with a 12-4-4 overall record. Offensively, the Duhawks compiled the conference's second-best scoring average (2.25), netting 18 goals on the season. On the defensive end, the Duhawks surrendered only nine goals to end the year with a 1.13 goals against average.  

Brandt now is a four-time All-Conference performer, in addition to having been named the 2022 Defensive MVP while Basinger earned his first All-Conference nod. Brandt, a midfielder out of Ankeny, Iowa scored twice in league play, taking five shots on the season. Basinger was second on the team in total points during conference play, netting two goals and an assist for seven points.

Galiana Torres closed out his 2023 campaign with three goals and three assists, giving the Madrid, Spain native nine total points to land him on the Honorable Mention team. Kelly, a defender out of Downers Grove, Ill. earned his spot on the team after a season that saw him score a goal and assist on five, earning him seven total points. Kelly's presence was most felt on the defensive side of the field, where he was instrumental in helping the Duhawks pick up nine shutout wins during the year.
