GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – The Loras College women's basketball team grabbed an 83-78 victory over #25 Elizabethtown College in its first game of the Puerto Rico Clásico at the Coliseo Mario Morales on Tuesday morning.
The Duhawks led by just two (25-23) following a back-and-forth opening quarter that saw the score tied seven times and held onto a one-point lead at the half.
Loras (7-2 overall, 2-1 A-R-C) outscored the Blue Jays 21-16 in the third quarter to increase its lead to six. The Duhawks led by as many as 12 with 3:13 remaining in the contest and finished the game out strong shooting 90 percent (9-of-10) from the charity stripe in the final 49 seconds of play to come out on top.
Silvana Scarsella led all scorers with a career-high 30 points. The Des Plaines, Ill. native shot 9-of-10 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from behind the arc.
Madison Fleckenstein followed closely behind, finishing with 21 points, six assists and two steals.
Madison Haslow and
Sami Martin added in nine points apiece to go along with six and eight boards, respectively, in the win.
As a team, the Duhawks shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) compared to the Blue Jays 41.3 percent (26-of-63).
