Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against UW-Platteville

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College women's basketball team dropped a nonconference contest against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, 57-71, Saturday afternoon inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
 
The only tie during the contest came with 5:43 remaining in the opening quarter, after Emerson Whittenbaugh finished a layup to knot the score at 9-9. The Pioneers closed out the first period on a 14-4 run to hold a 10-point lead heading into the second quarter.
 
The Duhawk defense held UW-Platteville (4-2 overall, 0-0 WIAC) to just eight second period points, while the offense also cut the Pioneer lead to just one with 2:18 left to play. At the midway point, the Purple and Gold trailed 31-27.
 
Loras (4-2, 1-1 A-R-C) outscored the Pioneers 21-19 in the third quarter to cut the UW-Platteville lead to just two, 50-48, with one quarter to go. The visitors responded in the final period, increasing their lead to as many as 15 while holding the Duhawks to just nine points.
 
Madalyn Reichmann led the way for the Orange and Blue, finishing with a double-double which featured 21 points and 10 boards. Ella Mackiewicz followed closely behind with 19 points and four rebounds, while Brynlee Nelson rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. As a team, UW-Platteville shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the floor and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from behind the arc.
 
Sami Martin paced the Loras offense, scoring a team-high 20 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Madison Fleckenstein added in 10 points, while Silvana Scarsella and Madison Haslow contributed six points apiece. Loras shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field and just 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from downtown.
 
Up Next: The Duhawks return to A-R-C play on Saturday, Dec. 9 as they take on Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Neb. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
