DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's basketball team utilized sharp three point shooting over the final few minutes of play to secure a tightly contested 94-82 victory over Lake Forest College on day one of the Holiday Classic on Friday night inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
Sophomore forward
Jack Haynes led the way offensively for the Duhawks (10-1 overall, 2-1 American Rivers Conference), securing the first double-double of his career after scoring a team-high 20 points, shooting 10-for-14 from the floor, while adding in 10 rebounds in 24 minutes of play off the bench.
Declan Ciurlik and
Ali Sabet each scored 15 points, going an identical 3-for-5 from deep. Ciurlik hauled in seven rebounds and recorded four assists, while Sabet was 5-of-7 from the floor with three assists and a steal.
Tyler Bass recorded his fourth double-double of the season after finishing with 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. His busy night didn't end there, as the forward passed for a career-high five assists.
Myles Barry rounded out double-digit scorers finishing with 10 points, four assists, two rebounds and a steal.
The Foresters (3-8) opened up play with back-to-back baskets to go up 5-0, but a quick 10-2 run by Loras got the Purple and Gold right back into things. The teams battled back and forth, with the Duhawks owning a 10-point lead at 10:17, but Lake Forest held on to make it a single digit deficit at halftime (49-40).
The second half was mainly controlled by Loras, but a quick 10-5 run by Lake Forest got the Foresters within four points, 81-77, with only 3:55 remaining in regulation.
Sabet knocked down two free throws before hitting a three to extend the lead to nine (86-77), but thanks to back-to-back threes by Ciurlik on the following two ensuing possessions, Loras was able fend off the Forester's final surge to protect the home court and give Loras its eighth consecutive win.
The Duhawks finished the game shooting 49.4 percent (38-for-77) from the floor, including 40 percent (14-for-35) from beyond the arc. Lake Forest didn't fall far behind, shooting 49.2 percent (32-65) from the floor while holding the advantage in three point territory (41.7 percent) and at free throw line (8-for-8).
Up next, the Duhawks return to the AWC tomorrow evening to face the red-hot Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors. Tip is set for 6 p.m. at Lillis Court.
