WAVERLY, Iowa (March 24, 2023) – Loras College baseball scored early and often on Friday night to get American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play started with a 7-3 road victory at Wartburg College.
The Duhawks (10-5, 1-0 A-R-C) scored in four of the first five innings to get ahead early on the Knights (5-5, 0-1 A-R-C) and take a 6-0 lead before hanging on down the stretch.
Just two batters into the game, sophomore
Max McCallum had the Duhawks up 2-0 after he belted a two-run home run to left center field. After a scoreless second inning, the Duhawks plated at least one run in each of the next three frames to take a commanding lead.
Junior
Daniel Rogers added a sacrifice fly in the third inning before graduate student
Dakota Church delivered another big blow in the fourth inning as his two-RBI double with one down sent the lead to 5-0. Graduate student
Ryan Wohlers smacked an RBI double of his own in the fifth to send the lead to 6-0.
While the offense was building a lead, senior
Davis Pasco was taking care of business on the mound as he held the Knights to just four hits over his 5.0+ innings of work. The Knights finally got on the board in the top of the sixth after the first two batters reached to force Pasco from the game in favor of freshman
TJ Boyd.
Wartburg plated two runs in the inning, but only one was earned to chip into the lead. The Knights added one more in the seventh before the Duhawks got one in the eighth on an RBI single from senior
Max Cullen to push the margin to its final 7-3 score.
Pasco and Boyd combined to allow just eight Wartburg hits and two earned runs while fanning a total of 11 Knights hitters. Pasco earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season through his first four appearances.
Loras and Wartburg conclude the series on Saturday, March 25, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 P.M.
