April 12, 2023 – Even while battling some windy conditions at the Tucker Tennis Courts, the Loras College men's tennis team made easy work of their crosstown rivals as the Duhawks swept the University of Dubuque 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Duhawks (8-5, 1-2 A-R-C) got their first win in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) action in dominating fashion as they didn't drop a single set to the Spartans (2-11, 0-4 A-R-C). It marks just the second 9-0 sweep for the Duhawks this season.
Loras' No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams mirrored each other with 8-1 wins as senior
Kevin Blomquist and
Thomas Kampmier took care of business at ones while senior
Konnor Barth and freshman
Gage Becker did the same at twos.
The closest battle in doubles play came at threes as sophomore
Kareem Kassas and freshman
Lucas Healy still came away with an 8-4 victory, sending Loras into singles play with a 3-0 lead.
The top battles in singles action came at Nos. 1 and 6 as Blomquist outdueled Dubuque's Bjarne Bachmann 6-4, 6-4 to take the match, marking his first conference win of the season.
At No. 6, senior
Sean Gelski had to work for his win against a conference foe as he too came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dubuque's Brady McIntyre. While Becker and Kassas came close to sweeping their singles matches, only Barth accomplished the feat as he wrapped up the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fives against Dubuque's Alexander Hardin.
This A-R-C showdown is the first in a stretch of three matches in three days for the Duhawks as they get back to action tomorrow, Thursday April 13, versus Cornell College at 12 P.M. at the Tucker Tennis Courts.
