April 14, 2023 – While engaged in one of the more unique atmospheres in college tennis, the Loras College men's tennis team won a fun and competitive match with Simpson College on Friday afternoon by an 8-1 final.
The Duhawks (10-5, 2-2 A-R-C) won their third match in as many days and got back to .500 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play with their near sweep of the Storm (3-10, 1-3 A-R-C).
Loras fell just once on Friday as sophomore
Kareem Kassas and freshman
Lucas Healy put up a good battle but fell 8-6 to Ethan Humble and Drake Downard at No. 3 doubles. That match was just one example of the back-and-forth tennis played in doubles as freshman
Gage Becker and senior
Konnor Barth eked out a win at No. 2 doubles with an 8-7 (7-4) victory over Caleb Vasconez and Aaron Price.
Loras won all six singles matches in straight sets, but never had it that easy as nearly every Storm player managed to just hang around and make things difficult on the Duhawks. Senior
Kevin Blomquist took the No. 1 singles bout 6-2, 6-2 over Vasconez in the quickest bout out of all the singles matches.
At No. 2, junior
Thomas Kampmier took down Javier Robles 6-1, 7-5 as his Storm counterpart made things interesting in the second set. Nos. 4-6 singles all went the way of the Duhawks as Barth, Kassas, and senior
Sean Gelski each handled their opponents.
The most competitive match of the day came at No. 3 singles as Becker battled not just Simpson's Aaron Price, but also a significant cramp during the second set that left him hobbled on multiple occasions. Despite the injury, Becker prevailed 7-6 (10-8) in a close first set before gutting out another tiebreaker win at 7-6 (8-3) in the second set.
Loras will play its fourth match in four days tomorrow morning, Saturday April 15, at 10 A.M. versus Central College at the Tucker Tennis Courts.
