PELLA, Iowa (April 23, 2023) – Loras College baseball saw its recent hot streak come to an abrupt halt on Saturday afternoon as the Duhawks were taken down twice by Central College in 12-2 and 16-3 losses.
The Duhawks (21-12, 12-6 A-R-C) had won nine straight games in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play heading into Saturday's doubleheader, but the Dutch (13-18, 7-11 A-R-C) weren't impressed as their offense caught fire for two run-rule performances.
Central 12, Loras 2 (F/7)
Despite grabbing an early lead in the top of the first on an RBI double from senior
Dakota Church, the Duhawks couldn't hold the Central offense down as the Dutch responded with one run in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second to take the lead.
After a two-out solo home run for senior
Ryan Wohlers tied the game in the top of the fourth, Loras' luck ran out as the Dutch tallied six runs, highlighted by a three-RBI triple, to take a commanding 8-2 lead. The Dutch added four more runs in the sixth inning despite having only two hits in the frame as they ended the Duhawk winning streak in dominating fashion.
Senior starter
Matt Jeter was handed the loss after he pitched the first four innings and surrendered eight runs (six earned) on eight hits. Conversely, Central's Declan O'Hare got the win after holding Loras to just six hits and two earned runs.
Central 16, Loras 3 (F/7)
Central's offense only got stronger as the day went, but in game two it was the Duhawks who again struck first with one run in each of the first two frames. Senior
Max Cullen drove in Church with a sacrifice fly in the first inning before freshman
Jackson Cullen reached on an error that allowed senior
Tyler Pransky to score in the second inning.
Central quickly erased its two-run deficit with a seven-spot in the bottom of the third inning, a frame that featured two two-run homers and a three-run double. That fourth inning opened the floodgates for Central as they scattered nine more runs across the final three innings to pull away for a 16-3 win.
The Duhawks have a chance to get back in the win column on Tuesday, April 25, in a nonconference tilt with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. First pitch at Petrakis Park is scheduled for 5 P.M.
