LINCOLN, Neb. (April 24, 2023) – The third match in as many days for the Loras College men's tennis team proved to be the most competitive of the week as the Duhawks captured a narrow 5-4 win over Nebraska Wesleyan University.
The Duhawks (12-7, 4-4 A-R-C) trailed at the end of doubles play but secured four singles wins to outlast the Prairie Wolves (4-7, 3-5 A-R-C) and finish the regular season with a 4-4 record in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) action.
Loras claimed the win at No. 1 doubles in the closest of all the doubles bouts as senior
Kevin Blomquist and junior
Thomas Kampmier prevailed 8-5 over Ryan Carey and Will Olson. The Prairie Wolves took the other two bouts by scores of 8-4 and 8-2 to lead 2-1 heading to singles.
At No. 2 singles, Kampmier dropped his first set to Olson, but that flipped a switch in the junior as he dominated the next two sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 to take the match.
Freshman
Gage Becker dominated his bout at No. 3 singles for a 6-1, 6-1 win while senior
Konnor Barth was pushed into a three-set battle at No. 4 singles. Like Kampmier, Barth dropped the opening set against Jacob Balfany, but he too battled back for a 6-3 win in set two and a 6-4 win in set three.
Sophomore
Henry Condo secured a win at No. 6 singles to help the Duhawks clinch the narrow match victory. Condo has appeared in just six matches this season as a varsity member, but he improved to 5-1 overall in singles with his victory on Sunday when he defeated Hayden Retzlaff 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
With the win, the Duhawks secured the fifth seed in the upcoming A-R-C Tournament and will travel to face fourth-seeded Wartburg College on Tuesday, April 25, at 4 P.M. The winner will advance to face top-seeded Luther College on Thursday in the semifinals.
