Baseball Falls 14-4 to No. 10 UW-Whitewater on Thursday

WHITEWATER, Wis. (April 6, 2023) – Loras College baseball had its work cut out for itself on as a long doubleheader on Wednesday left them without much rest before a road matchup at No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Thursday.

The Duhawks (15-10) fell to the Warhawks (12-4) 14-4 in eight innings on Thursday afternoon as the host squad jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after just one inning.
After stranding a pair of runners in the top half of the inning, the Duhawks took to the field against the Warhawks and struggled to stop the bleeding as four Warhawk hits and two Loras errors led to a six-run frame.

UW-Whitewater added one more in the third inning to make it 7-0 before the Duhawks finally got on the board in the fifth. Three-straight two-out hits, bookended by a two-RBI double for junior Nick DiBenedetto, plated a pair of runs as Loras tried to stay in contention.

The Warhawks got one back in the bottom of the fifth and then added one more run in the sixth ahead of another two-run inning for Loras in the eighth. Both runs for Loras were the result of wild pitches as the Duhawks did not record a hit in the frame.

In the bottom half, the Warhawks seemingly took their frustrations from the previous half inning out on the Duhawks as they tallied seven hits and five runs to end the game via run rule with a walk-off single.

Sophomore starter John Cornelius got saddled with the loss for his first decision of 2023. Reliever Cameron Nohos calmed the tides in his four innings of work as he allowed only two earned runs on four hits. At the plate, each sophomore Max McCallum and senior Mitch Gruber had multi-hits games.

Loras will take the field again on Tuesday, April 11 with a single conference game at Simpson College at 6 P.M. in Indianola, Iowa. That game will be the rubber match of the season series after the sides split a doubleheader in Dubuque on March 28.
