May 6, 2023 – The Loras College track & field programs finished the regular season portion of their 2023 outdoor schedule on Friday afternoon as the Duhawks hosted the Dr. Tucker Open and sent their seniors out in style.
The fourth-ranked men's team got plenty of strong performances across the board, including a handful from some of the seniors who were honored during the senior day ceremony.
The senior duo of
Mike Jasa and
Carter Oberfoell ran their final 800-meter runs on the Finnegan Family Track on Friday night, leading to a massive 1:47.81 time for Jasa that is not only a school record, but also ranks No. 1 in Division III this season and is third-best all-time in Division III history. Oberfoell was right on Jasa's heels with a 1:49.62 that ranks No. 3 in the country this season.
Jasa and Oberfoell weren't the only duo to capture the attention of their Duhawk teammates as senior
Wyatt Kelly and junior
Ryan Harvey took on the 1500-meters. While battling through heavy rain toward the end of the meet, Kelly finished his final home race with a 3:45.99 to set a school record and rank No. 6 in the country while Harvey ran a 3:47.97 to rank 14
th in the nation.
Three other seniors won their events inside the Rock Bowl on Friday, highlighted by
Matt Bandy taking the top spot on the high jump podium with a 2.04-meter clearance, marking the 14
th-best time in the country this season. Loras also saw senior
Ray Venditti win the pole vault event at 4.73 meters as senior
Josh Smith took the crown in the 400-meter dash with a 48.49 that ranks eighth in school history.
Another notable mark came from junior
Derik Bunten in the long jump as he again broke his own school record with a 7.53-meter jump on Friday. Bunten ranks No. 2 in the country as of Saturday morning.
The next time the Duhawks hit the track will be in the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Championship this coming weekend, Thursday-Saturday, May 11-13. The championships will take place in Decorah, Iowa as Luther College prepares to host.
