DECORAH, Iowa – The Loras College football team cruised to a 48-13 victory over Luther College on Saturday afternoon at Carlson Stadium.
Quarterback
Joey Helminiak had a career day throwing the football. The Dubuque native completed 22 of 32 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns, both career highs.
Jaheem Haynes hauled in five catches for a game high 101 yards, which also marked a career high, while also finding the endzone.
Jimmy Peterson recorded three catches for 64 yards while
Jacob Tedrow racked up 47 yards with a game high eight catches and two touchdowns.
Tanner Gile led the rushing attack for Loras, tallying 30 carries for a career high 105 yards and one touchdown.
On defense,
Michael Carney led the Duhawks with nine tackles, followed by
Henry Ivers and Niko Jermilo with six and five tackles, respectively. Ivers also recorded a defensive touchdown after recovering a fumble and returning it 79 yards to the endzone.
Brandon Glover had six pass breakups on the afternoon while
Brandon Phelps recorded his first interception of the year for the Duhawks.
Loras (1-5 overall, 1-3 A-R-C) got on the scoreboard first after Helminiak connected with Haynes for a seven-yard touchdown pass. The Purple and Gold added to their lead thanks to a four-yard touchdown run from Gile to end the first quarter.
Luther (1-4, 0-3) responded with their first touchdown of game, a two-yard rushing touchdown by Aiden Damiani at the 7:47 mark in the second quarter. Loras added their third touchdown of the game three minutes later thanks to a Tedrow two-yard touchdown reception.
During the following drive, the Duhawk defense was able to force a fumble that was recovered by Ivers and returned 79 yards for a touchdown.
Loras added two touchdowns in the third quarter, both in the air.
Brock Couch capped off a 10 play, 75-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown catch. Then it was
Braedon Tranel catching a five-yard touchdown pass from Helminiak. Luther would add a touchdown in the fourth quarter before Tedrow caught his second touchdown pass of the contest to close out the game.
The Loras defense help the Norse to 336 yards of total offense en route to their 48-13 victory.
