Duhawks Place Three at Luther College Open

DECORAH, Iowa - All the freshmen wrestlers of the Loras College men's wrestling team took the mat on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Luther College Open.

At 125 lbs, Connor Fiser claimed sixth place. After a first-round bye, he won his first match of the day, 5-3, before dropping his quarterfinal match. Fiser rebounded with close back-to-back wins (12-10 and 4-3). In the fifth-place match, he unfortunately had to medically forfeit, ending his tournament.

Gunnar Thompson (174 lbs) went 3-2 on his way to a seventh-place finish. In the first round, he won 9-5 before losing in the quarterfinals. Thompson went on to win his next match, 21-15. A loss in the third round of the consolations sent him to the seventh-place match, where he finished with a 9-6 win.

Heavyweight Sam Costello was the final medalist for the Duhawks, claiming an eighth-place finish. A first-round loss dropped him to the consolations, yet Costello rattled off three wins (8-2, 2-1, and a medical forfeit) to reach the consolation semifinals. His day concluded with back-to-back losses to finalize his placement.

The Duhawks next competition is at the Battle in the Bluffs. This premier Midwest vs. East Coast dual meet features Loras taking on the Stevens Institute of Technology, while The College of New Jersey competes against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The meet, held in La Crosse, Wis., begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14.
