Duhawks Fall Short Against the Knights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Loras College women's basketball team fell short in a close contest against the Calvin University Knights on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Duhawks went on an 8-0 run to begin the first quarter of the game and ended up leading 16-8 at the end of the opening period.
 
Loras (0-4 overall, 0-0 A-R-C) and Calvin (2-3, 0-0 MIAA) both recorded 14 points apiece in the second quarter, which kept the Duhawks infront at the half, 30-22.
 
In the third, the Knights battled back, outscoring the Duhawks 20-9, taking over the lead, 42-39, heading into the fourth.
 
The fourth quarter was back-and-forth as both squads put down 14 points each, but Calvin edged out the Duhawks in the final minutes to grab the 54-51 victory.
 
Silvana Scarsella and Emerson Whittenbaugh led the scoring for the Duhawks as both tallied 11 points on the day. Scarsella added four assists and one steal to her stat line, while Whittenbaugh totaled six rebounds, four steals and one assist.
Freshman Ashtyn Kelderman contributed eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists and one steal.
 
From the floor the Duhawks shot 30.6 percent (15-49) and 87.5 percent from the free throw line (14-16).
 
Anna Hernandez led the way for the Knights with 23 points. She pulled down eight rebounds, while also dishing out three assists and securing three steals. Katelyn LaRue rounded out the double-digit scorers for Calvin chipping in 12 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
 
The Knights shot 34 percent from the field (16-47) and 35 percent from beyond the arc (7-20). However, from the free throw line they were 68.2 percent (15-22)
 
Up Next: The Duhawks welcome Millikin University to the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center for a non conference match up on Friday, Nov. 22. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
