Duhawks Topple Warriors, 62-49

WAUWATOSA, Wis. – The Duhawk women's basketball teamed secured a 62-49 win over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors this evening.

In the opening minutes of the contest, Wisconsin Lutheran (4-5, 2-0 NACC) went on a 7-0 run to take an early 7-0 lead.

Ashtyn Kelderman and Lexi Beier came in off the bench and contributed the first points for the Duhawks after Kelderman put home a three-pointer off an assist from Beier. However, the Warriors continued to add to the lead and held a 10-point lead over the Duhawks at the end of the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the Purple and Gold came out firing as they went on a 10 -0 run to tie the score at 16-16. The first lead of the night for Loras (2-7. 0-2 A-R-C) would come by way of Emerson Whittenbaugh as she nailed home a three pointer to give the Duhawks a 19-16 lead.

The offense was finally clicking for Loras as the team went on to a 16 -0 run off another three made by Claire Wagner. At the end of the first half, the Duhawks led by seven and outscored the Warriors 19 -2 in the quarter scoring 14 points off nine Wisconsin Lutheran turnovers.

Wisconsin Lutheran tried to battle its way back in the beginning of the second half with a 7-0 run to tie the score at 25-25. From that point on both squads traded baskets, but no matter how many times the Warriors tried to regain the lead or pull away, the Duhawks responded and ultimately secured the win.

Wagner paced the Duhawks in scoring with a season-high 25 points. The Westchester, Ill. Native added eight rebounds and a pair of assists and steals to her stay line as well. Silvana Scarsella and Emerson Whittenbaugh also finished in double figures for Loras with Scarsella adding in 13 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and three steal, while. Whittenbaugh scored 12 points and pulled down six boards.

As a team the Purple and Gold shot 36.4 (20-of-55) percent from the field, 25 (7-of-28) from beyond the arc, and 75 (15-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Leading the way for Wisconsin Lutheran was Jayden Hill who totaled 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded four steals. Mack Hogenson and Abby Cole were the only other Warriors in double digits finishing with 11 and 12 points respectively.

The Warriors shot 26.8 (15-of-56) from the floor, 15.6 (5-of-32) percent from three-point range, and 63.6 (number) from the free throw line.

Up Next: Loras travels to the University of Dubuque for the Paxton's Pack Classic on Sunday, Dec. 29 and Monday, Dec. 30. The Duhawks will take on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls at 4 p.m. on day one and conclude the tournament against The University of Olivet at 1 p.m.
