Women's Basketball Falls Short in Game One of Paxton's Classic

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College women's basketball team suffered a 65-57 loss to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Sunday afternoon.

In the first quarter, the Duhawks would lead by as many as six points, but with 46 seconds left in the first, the Falcons would take the lead for the first time with a score of 13-12, finishing the first quarter with a two-point lead going into the second.

To begin the second quarter, University of Wisconsin-River Falls (7-3, 0-0 WIAC) would go on a 9-0 run and widen their lead to 21-12. Loras (2-8, 0-2 A-R-C) would battle back and eventually take the lead 30-28 at the end of the first half.

The Falcons would tie the score 32-32 with 7:48 left to go in the third and would ultimately take advantage for the remainder of the contest.

River Falls' Olivia Hoerl led the offense with 17 points while grabbing two steals on the night. The only other Falcon in double digits was Zoey Buchan who ended the night with 14 points in addition to six rebounds, four assists and a steal.

As a team the Falcons were 38.7 (24-62) percent from the field, 42.9 (8-19) percent from three, and 47.4 (9-19) percent from the free throw line.

For the Purple and Gold, Claire Wagner paced the team with 17 points while securing 11 rebounds and adding an assist and a steal. Emerson Whittenbaugh was the only other player in double figures for the Duhawks. Whittenbaugh earned 14 points along with seven rebounds, an assist and a steal.

The Duhawks as a team shot 29.5 (18-61) percent from the field, 27.6 (8-29) percent from beyond the arc, and were 100 (13-13) percent from the charity stripe.

Up Next: The Duhawks face the University of Olivet on Monday, Dec. 30 for day two of the Paxton's Classic hosted by the University of Dubuque. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
