DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's volleyball team defeated Benedictine University, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
The Duhawks broke a 6-6 tie early in the opening set with a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. Loras (7-0) led by as many as six (19-13), but the Eagles used a 9-3 run to tie things up at 22 apiece. The Purple and Gold benefitted from a pair of attack errors by the visitors and a kill by
Tyler Kratochvil to take set one 25-23.
Loras closed out set two strong, breaking a 19-19 tie with a 6-2 run, which featured three
Corey Mayotte kills, two Benedictine (4-3) errors and a
Dorian Fiorenza service ace.
After some back-and-forth play in the beginning of set three, the Duhawks outscored the Eagles 12-3 to take a commanding 14-6 lead. The Purple and Gold maintained control for the remainder of the set to earn the 25-20 victory and complete their sixth sweep so far this season.
Anthony Dobie led the Benedictine offense with 13 kills. Cooper Armstrong followed closely behind with 12 kills, while Spence VanEngen dished out 33 assists in the loss. As a team, the Eagles hit .247, finishing with 39 kills and 18 errors in 85 attempts.
Loras was led by Mayotte who finished with 13 kills. Fiorenza added in eight kills and a game-high six digs, while
Joe Horn tallied 31 assists in the win. As a team, the Duhawks hit .423, which featured 39 kills and nine errors in 71 attempts.
