IOWA CITY, Iowa – Hawkeye pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, while 10 others recorded hits to lead No. 18 Iowa to a 20-6 win over the Loras College Duhawks on Tuesday afternoon at Duane Banks Field. The loss will not count against Loras' regular season record, as the Duhawks used this game as an exhibition, also meaning that no stats will count toward any season or career totals.
The 18th-ranked Hawkeyes entered the matchup 2-1 on the season after most recently falling to Lehigh, 8-4, on Sunday, Feb. 18.
Iowa got on the board early with a two-run homer at the bottom of the first. That score triggered a 15-0 run over the first six innings before Loras was able to respond with an RBI single from senior outfielder
Nick DiBenedetto in the seventh.
The Hawkeyes tacked on two more runs at the bottom of the frame, before a two-RBI double from senior utility man
Daniel Rogers got Loras back on the board at the top of the eighth.
Iowa answered with three runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from catcher Reese Moore.
Loras closed out scoring with three runs in the ninth.
Max McCallum reached second on an error, allowing
Alex Sandoval and DiBendetto to score before another error by Iowa allowed McCallum to score on the next at-bat.
Overall, the Duhawks recorded nine hits off Iowa's pitching. Rogers led the way with three, followed by six others with one apiece. Nine pitchers saw action for Loras, with
John Cornelius leading the way with three strikeouts.
The Duhawks return to action on Friday, Feb. 23 against Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
